Economic Development

Sustained Hope is also building relationships in Ghana by helping to create small businesses to help meet various families' needs.
Sustained Hope Ghana has a serious vetting process of those individuals interested in starting a business under Sustained Hope. Each partner must sign a commitment form that includes the by-laws and business plan that is being put together for the potential business. Those interested will be equal partners within the business. Profits will be distributed periodically as seen fit by the group.
Sustained Hope will not receive any money from the business.

Profit distribution is as follows:
  • The business will first give 10% to their local church or to village development.
  • The next 10% will be set aside to eventually start another business for themselves or for another group.
  • 5% will be set aside for benevolence funds (this will allow the business to help those in need without sacrificing the health of the business.
  • Another percentage (determined by the business owners and Sustained Hope) will be set aside for the ongoing operation of the business.
  • What is left will be distributed equally among the owners of the business.
Businesses will be started fully funded or they will not be started. Too many businesses are started without having the money needed to fully fund it and keep it going until income begins to come in. For example, a poultry farm needs to be started with at least 100 chicks. It takes 6 months for the chicks to begin laying eggs. Proper food, chemicals, and shelters must be provided to care for those chickens until they begin laying eggs and income is generated. This could cost from 4,000 to 8,000 cedis ($1,000-$2,000). The full amount will be provided upon the start of the business.

Sustained Hope Ghana will be actively involved in all aspects of the business until it is up and running efficiently. We will then step aside and give full control over to the partners. However, we will still help them with the accounting of funds and accountability but will not actively work in the business.
